What is BOVAMINE® Dairy?
BOVAMINE® Dairy Brand probiotics are designed to be added daily to the diet of dairy animals of all ages and stages of lactation, including dry cows. For dairy cows, BOVAMINE® Dairy can be hand-added to a TMR or premix or can be applied via a well-calibrated micro-ingredient machine. In the rumen, the combination of our unique lactic-acid-producing bacteria (Lactobacillus animalis LA-51) and our lactic-acid-utilizing bacteria (Propionibacterium freudenreichii PF-24) increases the conversion of feedstuffs into energy in the form of volatile acids (see Figure 1). In the lower intestinal tract, the probiotic organisms in BOVAMINE® Dairy improve digestive function, including the absorption of nutrients, inhibit colonization by potentially pathogenic bacteria, and improve gastrointestinal stability and immune responsiveness.
Efficiency of Milk Production
Daily feeding of BOVAMINE® Dairy to lactating dairy cows increases the average efficiency of energy-corrected milk production (EEMP) of a herd by 2-3% (see Figure 2). In well-controlled university research trials conducted in herds greater than 55 days-in-milk from 2005 through 2013, the demonstrated increase in efficiency of milk production ranged from 0.6% to 5.5%. More recently, in an examination of field data from four large dairy herds (17,500 cows, after only three weeks of daily feeding of BOVAMINE® Dairy, efficiency of milk production increased 3.5% and 4.3% in two Holstein herds and by 2.6% and 1.9% in two highly-efficient Jersey herds (see Figure 3).
Impact of BOVAMINE® Dairy on the incidence of adverse health events and rates of involuntary culling
From an examination of two long-term sets of observations from large commercial dairy herds, on which culling rates were recorded before and during the use of BOVAMINE® Dairy, we saw a significant shift in the percentage of animals that showed adverse heath events or were involuntarily culled from the herd.
