Chr. Hansen upgrades center for coloring foodstuffs in Italy.

Due to the pervasive health and naturalness trend, consumers across the globe are requesting foods with fewer and simpler ingredients. As a result the food and beverage industry’s demand for coloring foodstuffs is increasing.

In order to better support food manufacturers take the leap to coloring foodstuffs, Chr. Hansen has invested in significantly upgrading its processing, warehousing and laboratory facilities for food ingredients with coloring properties in Canossa, Italy.

Accentuates the importance of natural
“We have been offering coloring foodstuffs as part of our natural colors portfolio for years, but now we have launched a new strategy under the headline Nature’s No. 1 that accentuates the importance of natural solutions in all our business areas. We are pressing ahead full speed developing and launching new natural solutions and our centrally located plant is well equipped for future growth within our popular FruitMax® range and other natural color solutions,” says Carsten Bennike, EVP, Natural Colors Division.

Upon the official inauguration attended by customers, food media and local business partners Bennike revealed that extensive plans are in place to continue upgrading the manufacturing capabilities over the next years including a new pilot plant during 2014.

“We have great expectations to the success in the market of our coloring foodstuff assortment. We have developed a full range of solutions that are fully compliant with the new EU Guidance Notes on coloring foodstuffs published in December, and this investment demonstrates that we consider the Canossa site a key building block in the Chr. Hansen manufacturing network for the Natural Colors Division,” Bennike explains.

A growing market
Coloring foodstuffs, processed from edible, natural sources such as fruits and vegetables gives food manufacturers the opportunity to ‘color food with food’ without making compromises on taste and appearance.

Chr. Hansen estimates the global market for coloring foodstuffs to be growing rapidly at a rate of 10-15% per year.
