The first point in a cascade...
The probiotic organisms in BOVAMINE® DAIRY products, Lactobacillus animalis LA51 (a lactic acid-producer) and Propionibacterium freudenreichii PF24 (a lactic-acid utilizer), have been shown to significantly reduce the prevalence (p<0.01) and concentration (p<0.01) of Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica in growing cattle (Stephens, et al, 2007, J. Food Protection 70:1252-1255). This demonstrable reduction in pathogen load likely leads to a reduction in pathogenic processes, which, in turn, leads to a healthy rumen and intestinal tract: ideal for the digestion and absorption of nutrients, optimal barrier functions, and effective immunosurveillance.
In pre-weaned dairy calves...
Daily feeding of BOVAMINE® DAIRY MILK REPLACER SUPPLEMENT was associated with better development of the GI tract of calves as they transition from milk to dry feeds, as well as, improved average daily gain (ADG) and post-weaning starter intake (see figures 1a and 2).
In post-weaned dairy calves...
Daily feeding of BOVAMINE® DAIRY CALF AND HEIFER supports and enhances the animal’s natural defenses against harmful bacteria, supports proper development of the rumen and GI tract (see table 1), enhances feed intake, and improves ADG (figure 1b).
It’s really all about healthy surface area for absorption...
Healthy papillae and villi are thin and pliable. Unhealthy papillae and villi are short, thick and blunt, which limits their ability to absorb nutrients. BOVAMINE® DAIRY promotes healthy ruminal papillae and intestinal villi. (Dick et al, 2013 The Prof. Anim. Sci. 29:107-115)
By supplementing the microflora in the rumen with probiotic bacteria, there is an:
- Increase in the production of propionic acid, a major source of energy
- Increase in rumen papillae length and absorptive surface area
By supplementing the microflora in the intestine with probiotic bacteria, there is a(n):
- Increase in the height of the villi and depth of the crypts
- Increase in the surface area for the absorption of nutrients
- Reduction in the concentration of harmful bacteria
- Reduction in the likelihood of inflammation caused by harmful bacteria
- Enhanced responsiveness of the immune system

The sequential use of our BOVAMINE® DAIRY products for pre-weaned calves and young, growing heifers increases the likelihood of future success of your replacements.
