Strains vs. Species

Probiotics that work is exactly what you will get with Chr. Hansen Probio-Tec® strains.

Three levels of probiotics

Probiotics are identified at three levels: Genus, species and strain.

Health Benefits on Strain Level

Studies confirm that health benefits are strain-specific and only rarely apply to species.

According to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) a probiotic must:

  • Be alive when administered
  • Have undergone controlled evaluation to document health benefits in the target host
  • Be a taxonomically defined microbe or combination of microbes (genus, species and strain level)
  • Be safe for its intended use

Chr. Hansen's Probio-Tec® strains

Promoted on strain level, Chr. Hansen's Probio-Tec® strains meet the WHO and ISAPP definitions.

We are constantly working to provide a deeper understanding and further evidence for the specific health benefits of our probiotics.

We welcome initiatives leading to stricter quality requirements for probiotics from regulatory bodies and industry associations.
