Probiotics are live microorganisms, such as bacteria, that “confer a health benefit to the host” (source: FAO/WHO 2002).
Probiotics are important for poultry production as they help the bird achieve and maintain a balanced microflora as quickly as possible. The chick hatches with a limited gut microflora (the range of microorganisms that live symbiotically in the intestine of the bird). It can take up to 4 weeks for the bird to achieve a stable adult microflora (a steady balance of beneficial and non-beneficial bacteria), which is important for bird growth and health.
Probiotics are identified at three levels: Genus, species and strain. Studies confirm that health and production benefits are strain-specific and only rarely apply to species.
Chr. Hansen probiotics contain unique, patented strains. They have specific, targeted, beneficial modes of action, making them particularly suitable for animal production.
About our poultry range

Our strains are 100% natural and contain unique, carefully selected spore-forming Bacillus bacteria; Bacillus subtilis, which have a high growth rate under intestinal conditions and high enzyme excretion, and Bacillus licheniformis, which stabilize the gut flora under intestinal challenge.
Spores are highly resistant, resting stages of the bacteria and offer a number of unique advantages as a probiotic:
